From the mountain to the sea - Break O'Day Council

Signage

Property/Business Signage

Planning approval is required for all signage to be installed or displayed (eg. sign writing) on a building. Council ensures there is equal access to limited advertising space and that the number and positioning of signs does not affect the visual amenity of the locality. An application for signage is submitted to council using the Development Application Form and the application fee for signage is $150.00. Council requires information on the proposed wording, pictures, photos and colour scheme of the intended signage before the application can be processed.

Tasmanian Visitor Information Signage (TVIS)

The TVIS signage is an integrated approach to providing information to visitors and potential visitors when they have a Tasmanian holiday. As well as roadside signage to confirm the location of tourism features, facilities and attractions this system also connects with Information Centres, Tourism Tasmania's website www.discovertasmania.com and promotional information booklets.

There are two specific designs of TVIS signage;

  • Tourism Feature (Attraction) Signs - White legend on brown background that direct tourists to natural, cultural and historic features and attractions.
  • Tourism Facility Signs - Yellow legend on blue background that directs tourists to tourism-related commercial facilities and services (e.g. accommodation, restaurants, craft shops).

The cost of all Tourism Feature and Facility signs rest with the applicant/business owner in nearly all cases. These costs include the manufacture, the erection, the maintenance and the removal of the sign on closure of the business. Once an application is approved by Tourism Tasmanian and the local Council a list of approved manufacturers will be forwarded to the applicant to organise their design and manufacture.

To apply for TVIS signage please contact the Tourism Signs Consultant, Tourism Tasmania on 03 6230 8352 to discuss your needs or contact the planning department on 03 6376 7933. If the application is approved the applicant must seek planning approval from Break O'Day Council before beginning works.
