Building and Training Levy's

BUILDING TRAINING LEVY FEE

The training levy is payable under the Building & Construction Industry Training Act 1990. The levy is based on the cost of building and construction work.

What is "building and construction work"?

The definition under the Act is very broad. It includes the erection, extension or alteration of buildings, structures, water and sewerage works, dams, road, tunnels, piers, jetties, docks, silos, masts and demolition work. (See www.tbcitb.com.au - Definition of Building and Construction Work.)

When is the levy to be paid?

The levy must be paid before Council approval can be given for the building or construction work. If building approval is not required such as for roads, dams etc, the levy must still be paid before work commences.

What is the "estimated cost"?

The levy is 0.2% of the estimated cost of building or construction work. The estimated cost is either the contract price or, if there is no contract, the cost detailed on the building application. Where neither of these applies, an accurate estimate of the cost of the building or construction work. This includes the cost of labour, materials and any other costs.

Council will calculate the cost estimate of your dwellings at $1000 per square meter unless you have written evidence on a contract price.

BUILDING LEVY

The Building Act 2000 provides for the Building Permit Levy to be collected by the Council for building work and associated plumbing work, costing $5,000 or more. The levy is paid into a State Government Trust fund. It will be used solely to develop a better regulatory environment to make Tasmania's building industry modem, efficient, and able to respond to future challenges. The applicant will be the owner, if applying as an owner-builder. A building permit cannot be issued until the levy is paid.

What will the levy cost?

The Building Regulations 2004 set the levy at 0.1% of the cost of the building work including the cost of associated plumbing work. This equates to $1 for every $1000 of the building contract cost.

Council will calculate the cost estimate of your dwelling at $1000 per square meter unless you have written evidence on a contract price.
