Waste
We are introducing Bin Tags
Bin tags – helping you get it right
As part of Council’s waste education program, bin tags are being introduced to help reduce contamination in waste and recycling. This will also help in reducing our community’s waste costs overall.
These tags are a simple way to show when something has been placed in the wrong bin and what needs to be fixed next time, or why it has not been collected.
You can find the Frequently Asked Questions here : FAQ Waste Tags
Yellow Recycling Tag
This is a warning tag and means that:
- Your bin has been checked
- Items were found that don’t belong in the recycling
The Waste Officer will write on your tag the items that need to be removed.
What you need to do:
Remove the incorrect items before your next collection or we may refuse to collect your bin next time.
Red General Waste Tag
If contamination continues, your bin may not be collected and you will find a red tag on your bin.
This means:
- The same issue has occurred more than once
- The bin cannot be emptied due to contamination
What you need to do:
Remove the incorrect items and place your bin out again on your next collection day.
Other reasons your bin may not be collected
Your bin may also not be emptied if:
- it is too heavy
- it is overfilled
- items are jammed inside the bin
- the bin is unsafe to empty
- it is not a Council-issued bin
- the bin has not been placed out safely for collection
If this occurs, a tag will be left on your bin explaining the issue.
Why is this important?
When the wrong items are placed in bins:
- Recycling loads can be rejected and sent to landfill
- Waste trucks and equipment can be damaged
- Costs increase for the whole community

General waste and recycling calendars will be posted out with annual rates notices at the end of the financial year in June.
Rate payers who receive their rates notice via email will also have the new waste calendar included.
If you do not receive a rates notice, waste calendars will be left with local Real Estate Agents.
Alternatively, drop in or contact Council for a calendar.
